Grilled Blackened Catfish

I was born and raised on the east coast, my mother was born and raised in the country part of Florida.. so many people tell me that makes me southern (*laughs* I do have a slight southern drawl). So today I decided to post more of my ‘favorite foods‘.. and I’m starting off with this beautiful Grilled Blackened Catfish recipe from Chow. I grew up eating fresh, gulf caught catfish with grits and let me just tell you.. those memories are making me hungry right now (laughs). This dish is a great way to enjoy fish with a kick of creole seasoning. View the ingredient list below and click above for the recipe. Another recipe.. is on its way..

Ummm Yummmmm! Would go great with a salad that had a light Ranch and cilantro dressing.

Catfish and grits! That certainly sounds Southern to me!! I’ve never had that combination but it sounds great…and that photo is gorgeous!!

    • #4 by Purely.. Kay on February 3, 2012 - 1:28 PM

It’s definitely southern and something I grew up on. I think you will love it Linda. If you don’t like grits, then you can definitely try it with polenta :) . I hope you have a great weekend

Born in Texas, lived in Florida…people in New England can’t really place my southern accent. One thing I know for sure…your recipe is southern through and through.

    • #6 by Purely.. Kay on February 3, 2012 - 1:32 PM

Hey I can relate to that.. I was born here, and I still have a southern accent lol. Which I think I get from being around my grandmother and mother. There’s nothing like a southern drawl ;) .. and this is definitely a southern dish that I enjoy :) . I hope you have a great weekend

I have yet to have catfish – I think it’s a NW thing… we’re kinda stuck on our salmon, halibut, trout, etc. I need to have it though, if it looks this good!

    • #10 by Purely.. Kay on February 3, 2012 - 2:46 PM

Oh I LOVE salmon, cod, etc.. they are wonderful fish. But I think catfish stole my heart at a young age lol. You definitely need to try it.. it’s soo darn good Courtney :) . I hope you have a great weekend

I love how comforting it is to remember recipes from my childhood. Great that you have cooked up something from your past. Your fish looks incredible. I have never had cat fish. I don’t think we can get it here in Australia.

It really is comforting and beings back wonderful memories. I never knew food could bring back a memory like it was yesterday.. but it definitely can. if you do get a chance to eat cat fish, I think you will love it :) . I hope you have a great weekend

Sounds good to me … but lightly blackened for me … (I’m a light weight when it comes to heat).

    • #14 by Purely.. Kay on February 4, 2012 - 11:58 AM

Some ‘blackened’ recipes don’t have a lot of heat (I’m not too big on a spicy food either). I will find you one and I am sure you will love it Frank :) . I hope you have a great weekend

Oh, I love this! My dad is from the midsouth (TN), so fried catfish is a big thing. I don’t have a grill, but do you think this can go in the oven? The broiler?

    • #20 by Purely.. Kay on February 4, 2012 - 12:02 PM

I love catfish fried too.. but I try to eat it grilled as well. I definitely think this can go in the oven. Preheat it to 375 and cook the fish. If you want the charred effect then you can place it in the broiler for a few minutes (use your own judgement on that). Let me know if you make this :) . I hope you have a great weekend

I think I would prefer polenta or may be mashed potatoes instead of grits.

    • #24 by Purely.. Kay on February 4, 2012 - 12:07 PM

I love grits Ms. Norma.. but I think polenta would go great with this as well :) . I hope you have a great weekend

Delicious! I do want a lot more lemon than that though. :)

    • #26 by Purely.. Kay on February 4, 2012 - 12:11 PM

Well then put some lemon on it Lisa :) . Recipes to me, are always open to be changed ;) . I hope you have a great weekend

I love catfish and in the Philippines, we cook them in various ways — fried, grilled, stewed with coconut milk and lots of chillies. ;-)

    • #30 by Purely.. Kay on February 4, 2012 - 12:15 PM

I never had stewed catfish before. This is the first time I’ve ever heard of it. I know, we’ve grilled, baked, and fried catfish but never stewed. Thank you so much for telling me this Malou.. I am now searching for a recipe :) . I hope you have a great weekend

—I’ve never had Cat Fish, but this looks devine. Do they have whiskers? x

    • #32 by Purely.. Kay on February 4, 2012 - 12:31 PM

When you catch a cat fish.. they do have whiskers actually. And they’re faces are weird looking to me lol. I hope you have a great weekend

  16. #33 by rsmacaalay on February 5, 2012 - 1:50 AM

We do this a lot in the Philippines but we do it in charcoal barbecues, it gives that added dimension to the flavour

    • #34 by Purely.. Kay on February 6, 2012 - 6:09 PM

Really?! Wow.. that just sounds delicious. I would love to taste it like that.. I know the flavor would be amazing. I hope you had a good day
