On the Walls of the Lower East Side

I remember saying, ‘when you walk the streets of New York City, you can find the most incredible art‘.. so take a walk with me. The Mondrian SoHo hotel currently features 120 vintage photos of the lower east side taken by Photographer Sol LeWitt in 1979. This beautiful 20 ft by 60 ft installation entitled ‘On the Walls of the Lower East Side‘, showcases graffiti and other art that was near the photographers home. Sol Lewitt believed walls are public, while books are private; but each provides the same information in different formats. Incredible. Click the links above for more. Enjoy!

You can’t wait to get to NY, and I can’t wait to walk the streets of London :) . But I really think you would love NYC, there is always an opportunity for a camera shot here :) . But you have to ask Daisy, Tonton, and the others if you can leave first lol. I hope you’re having a great day

The last pic I took on a wall was a Banksy piece! :-) Mandy

I was in NYC last year and I was fascinated with exactly this. London has good wall art too. Love it, great post.

    • #10 by Purely.. Kay on April 10, 2012 - 1:12 PM

I’ve heard London has great wall art and I can’t wait to get there and see it in person :) . I just can’t wait. I;m glad you enjoyed this post Niki :) . I hope you’re having a great day

Very interesting concept and photos :)

    • #12 by Purely.. Kay on April 10, 2012 - 1:13 PM

It definitely is a great concept Tandy.. and it beautifies the neighborhood which is always a good thing :) . I hope you’re having a great day

  7. #13 by ChgoJohn on April 10, 2012 - 12:27 PM

What a great way to exhibit this art, some of which is truly remarkable.

    • #14 by Purely.. Kay on April 10, 2012 - 1:15 PM

I couldn’t agree with you more John. I love art galleries and museums, but something like this really displays art in a broader sense. Oh.. did I tell you that I stated that you and Barbara (from Just A Smidgen), would be such a cool big brother and sister to anyone? :) . I hope you’re having a great day

      • #15 by ChgoJohn on April 10, 2012 - 11:48 PM

Thank you so much, Kay. That is a very kind thing to say. Barb is such a wonderfrul person that I’m honored you’d see me in that light. Ya know, there’s no limit to the number of siblings in a virtual World. There’ll always be room for another Li’l Sister in my family. Just sayin’ … :)

        • #16 by Purely.. Kay on April 11, 2012 - 1:16 AM

I know people tell me I write kind things, but in all honesty I write the truth. And like my mother always said.. “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say it at all”. So when I shut up.. that’s when you worry LOL. You have a great personality and I consider you apart of my virtual blog family like I do so many others that visit :) .

Very enjoyable indeed … and that wall in the lead image looks very interesting.

    • #18 by Purely.. Kay on April 10, 2012 - 1:16 PM

I’m glad you enjoyed this Frank. You always feature wonderful art at your space :) . You’re a great inspiration :) . I hope you’re having a great day

Thanks for sharing. Places like this make walking, rather than driving, so much more enjoyable.

    • #20 by Purely.. Kay on April 11, 2012 - 1:07 AM

Walking really can be enjoyable and you get to take in a lot as well :) . I hope you had a good day

    • #22 by Purely.. Kay on April 11, 2012 - 1:07 AM

  11. #23 by Kelly @ Inspired Edibles on April 10, 2012 - 4:45 PM

It’s neat how Lewitt was able to pull all of these different art forms onto one tidy canvas. Maybe not as fluid as seeing them in their true environments but still a captivating idea.

    • #24 by Purely.. Kay on April 11, 2012 - 1:09 AM

I think he took art that spoke to him, and put it all together. Its quite amazing in person. Every art, whether it be different or unique, has a wonderful voice :) . I hope you had a good day Kelly

What a cool thing, turning something unsightly into something beautiful. (Well not all of them started out bad looking, but some did!)

    • #28 by Purely.. Kay on April 11, 2012 - 1:11 AM

I guess it depends on the eye. Some people love certain art, some don’t. But any art piece usually makes you think or comment.. which is what I love most about art :) . It starts a conversation. I hope you and Katherine had a good day

  14. #29 by Just Ramblin' Pier on April 10, 2012 - 7:26 PM

    Very cool art. : )

    • #30 by Purely.. Kay on April 11, 2012 - 1:11 AM

Will be going to NYC, must make time to visit the walls. Want to see the Barrios sculptures on Park Avenue also. Need to do serious planning.

    • #32 by Purely.. Kay on April 11, 2012 - 1:13 AM

You definitely have to make your list out Ms. Norma. You may not get to see everything here but make sure you see whats important to you :) . When are you planning to visit? I hope you had a good day

      • #33 by Norma Chang on April 11, 2012 - 1:39 PM

I may be visiting this weekend but definitely next month. I know the city pretty well, visit often.

        • #34 by Purely.. Kay on April 11, 2012 - 1:44 PM

I had no idea you visited often :) . I can’t wait to hear about your travels here :)

  16. #35 by Just A Smidgen on April 10, 2012 - 10:46 PM

Graffiti can be so beautiful.. I’d love to have been there to see this installation!

    • #36 by Purely.. Kay on April 11, 2012 - 1:14 AM

Graffiti can be beautiful, but unfortunately some people think its not art. Anything that has a voice to me, is art. I think you wouldn’t loved this installation Barbara :) . I hope you had a good day

  17. #37 by Kristy on April 11, 2012 - 12:45 AM

What a terrific installation and I must really get to visit NY. The installation has enriched in an urban way a rather bland street.

    • #44 by Purely.. Kay on April 11, 2012 - 1:35 PM

I think you would capture so many wonderful images if you visited my friend :) . And you’re right.. art really can u[lift a neighborhood and it has definitely done that there :) . I hope you’re having a good day

  24. #53 by baconbiscuit212 on April 12, 2012 - 2:55 PM

Wow. You know, I walk by this fast all the time (I live on the edge of the East Village and LES) and never realized it was Sol LeWitt! How clueless am I?! Just goes to show that I have to slow down and that amazing things are everywhere!

    • #54 by Purely.. Kay on April 12, 2012 - 4:32 PM

You are right next to this place. Well when you’re walking in NYC, usually you’re trying to get to your destination. I know there are times when I don’t stop to look at all.. but when you do, you can have some fun :) . I hope you’re having a good day :)
